Photography in the National Parks – Telling A Story With Your Photos

For those of you who may not know, I am a contributing writer and photographer to the National Parks Traveler website.  I share space with another photographer and every month, we each have an article published to this website’s Photography in the National Parks column.

My latest article has just been published and it deals with telling a story.  I suppose it’s a sort of “fluff” story, but it  does make a point and it’s something that can be applied by you readers, bloggers, and anybody who captures images in a national park either with a smartphone, point & shoot, or film / digital SLR.

My Wish For You This 2014

Becky At Sotol Vista

So, yesterday’s short blog was a “Happy New Year” post.  Today’s post is a “what I wish for you (and for me) in 2014” short blog.

I posted this image of me at the Sotol Vista overlook of Big Bend National Park, Texas, because it represents all of the expansiveness of photography that I wish for you as well as myself.

I hope that 2014 brings many photographic possibilities your way.  And I hope that your camera gear is all fresh, ready and repaired (I just received a bill from the Canon Service Center for work on my 1-DX…..a bit of a surprise but I should have expected a pricey repair for a pricey camera – ahem).

I hope you get to travel more, see more exciting lands / people / vistas, capture more weddings / portraits / portfolios / events, or whatever it is that you enjoy photographing the most.

I hope to hear from you out there as to what your photographic aspirations are for this 2014.  Got any trips planned?  Wedding sessions reserved?  Contests to enter? Other photographic resolutions?

To all of you from me: Happy 2014!

Becky’s 2013 Photographic Review

Becky At The Window Overlook

While perusing several other blogs which I follow, I noted one of the photographic bloggers was preparing a year in review post.  I decided to do the same.

Going through all of my photos taken over the course of year gave me pause in which I realized that I had a really good year.  Oh, of course I had ups and downs, but all in all, I had a great deal more ups than downs.

In February, I traveled to Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Dead Horse State Park – all in Utah.  This was my first winter trip in many years (most of my trips are mainly during the late summer or fall seasons).  During that time, I hiked up to Delicate Arch and had the entire area all to myself for a good 30+ minutes, and was also fortunate enough on the previous day to witness a magical snow fall in an otherwise arid region.

In early April, I had the pleasure of conducting a portfolio photo session for  a stunningly beautiful belly dancer.

And in late April, I photographed the wedding of a former co-worker and her musician fiancee (who now has a jazz CD out on iTunes).  The weather was perfect, the bride was stunning, the wedding went off without a hitch, and the day couldn’t have been better – we all had a great time.

In July, I flew to Alaska for the first time in my life, spending a week with Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris in Katmai National Park and Preserve.  There, I captured some fantastic photos of the awesome coastal brown bears as they fished for the salmon along the Brooks River.  Prior to the trip to Katmai, I spent a few days just tooleying around the Anchorage area in a rental car, further cementing my desire to return in August 2014.

And I wasn’t finished with July travel.  Work required me to travel to London;  this time, it was via Business Class, which is a heck of a lot sweeter than economy, believe me.  In between work at the London office,  I managed to do things in that great city that I had not been able to accomplish during a visit two years prior (tour the National Gallery, ride on the London Eye at night and purchase a ticket to see Spamalot).

In October, I flew to Maine and spent a week on Mount Desert Island where I captured the gloriously-saturated colors of autumn.  Because this trip coincided with the  government shutdown, I investigated Acadia National Park via biplane rather than hiking.

Starting on the 7th day of September, I helped my 88-year old mother hang 3 hummingbird feeders;  throughout the month, I had the wonderful privilege of photographing the beauty and antics of the ruby-throated hummingbirds that made their annual migration through my part of southeast Texas.  During those days and evenings of photography, I digitally captured hummingbird behavior that I had never witnessed before.

In November (well, actually, that last day of November and the first day of December), I spent the weekend with my friends The Merchant Prince and his Lady Michelle, photographing their food & beverage venues and some crazy characters out at the Texas Renaissance Festival.

In December, I managed to salvage enough vacation days for a 13-hour drive to Big Bend National Park, where I spent 4 full days in this incredible southwest Texas park.  I was so taken with this place that I will be making the long drive back in late April 2014 for a week’s stay.

And, throughout the year when not traveling far and wide, I have visited and photographed the nearby Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge as well as Brazos Bend State Park.

Things have gone well, workwise.  My health has been good, as has the health of other members of my family.   I continue to contribute articles and photographs for the National Parks Traveler and my Facebook photography page has over 6000 Facebook Fans. Open-mouthed smile

Throughout the year, I got to do a lot of traveling and photography – the two things I love doing the most.  I guess I could have eschewed many of the trips and bought the big honkin’ prime lens that I’ve been lusting after for a couple of years now.  Instead, though, I chose to spend my discretionary income on traveling.  An old “rockhound” friend of my parents once told us “You can’t take your stuff with you but you can take your experiences with you”.  I totally believe that.  So, I opt for the travel experiences and thank my lucky stars for lensrentals.com Winking smile

Yes, there have been a few tough times, but not as many tough times as good times.  I’ve got a roof over my head, food in my tummy, a good job, and my family.  It’s been a really good year.

I look forward to next year and hope that it’s as good as this year has been.

Photography In The Parks: Scale, Perspective and Connection

Due to extenuating circumstances, the photographer with whom I share a monthly photography column on the National Parks Traveler website had to switch publication dates. So, here is the link to my latest photography column on the Traveler site. It deals with scale, perspective, and the connection these make with the viewer. The Traveler also has a Facebook page, so if you like what you see, then go on over to their FB Page and Like them!

Getting Intimate With Your Photography In The Parks

For those of you who may not know, I am a monthly contributor to a photography column hosted by the National Parks Traveler website.  I share this monthly space with another photographer.  My April column talks about getting intimate with your photography (I deliberately wanted it to be a little bit provocative).  Check it out if you are interested.  And, while you are at it, go over to the National Parks Traveler facebook page and Like them.

Updating Your Gravatar

7-21-2012 6-33-33 AM

Whenever I read – and Like – a blog post by a blogger I follow (or by a new blogger I have discovered), I tend to hover over the Gravatars of others who have Liked that same post.  If I see a potential interesting photo blogger who I might want to follow, I click on their Gravatar.

This takes me to their Gravatar profile .  Sometimes, I see other links listed on their profile that would take me to their blog post or their photo website.  Most of the time, though, I see nothing else on that person’s Gravatar; no link of any kind.  I now know that is because

They didn’t update their Gravatars

Just call me slow.  I knew I had a Gravatar associated with my WordPress account, but I had no idea that it was actually a sort of separate entity that I needed to update in order for people to check me out whenever they click on it.  I was clueless until this morning, when I clicked on another blogger’s Gravatar  and noticed a separate link in the upper right corner of the screen to my own Gravatar (see the photo at the top of this post). I clicked on that link and saw the stuff I originally typed into my Gravatar eons ago when I joined up with WordPress.  I also noticed that I, myself,  had not added any links to my WordPress site nor my Facebook page.  Yikes!

That little issue has been remedied.

Now, whenever I Like another blogger’s post, my Gravatar is there for others to see and  click upon, which will hopefully lead those others to my WordPress site, my photography website, and my Facebook Page.

Check Out My New Blog Site

I like writing almost as much as I like photography.  However, there are things about which I wish to write that may not necessarily be photography-related (even though I will always have a photo to accompany my writings), and many of you interested only in the photography part may not be as interested in the writing part.  So, I’ve created a new blog site here on WordPress:  www.musingsthoughtsrantsraves.wordpress.com (Musings, Thoughts, Rants, Raves) to encompass my not-so-photographically-related writings, opinions, musings, thoughts, rants, and raves.

Of course I will still be posting to this site.  It’s my baby!  But, now I have a writing site as well, and if you thought you knew me, then go to that other site and really get to know me. Winking smile

Spicy Cheese Coins with Pepper Jelly

94C7436-2_Cheese Coin Recipe

As promised in my previous post, here is the next recipe post with photos.  My sister made this during my April 2012 visit.  While I have tried for myself the recipes about which I previously blogged, I have not yet tried this one.  However, since my own tries at her other recipes have been successes, I’m pretty sure this one will turn out well too when I finally decide to make this one on my own.

Above is the recipe, below are the photos.  For the jelly, my sister bought a bunch of different pepper jellies produced by Micks.  I had no idea they made so many!

I unfortunately did not get any shots of the cheese dough preparation.  They were already mixed and rolled into logs and in the fridge before my arrival at my sister’s home.

Just Testing

I’m testing various and sundry methods of setting up multiple photos within my posts that allow for  clicks on my photos to take the clicker to my photography website, gallery, and (ahem) storefront.  One of the blogs I follow: Travel Photography by Dmitrii Lezine, commented that he uses Windows Live Writer, which links to his WordPress blog, and he can upload multiple photos rather than one per post.  So I thought I would give it a whirl.

PurpleFlowersWet

PinkTulips

Ok, let’s see how this works…..By golly, it works!

What you do, once you set up Windows Live Writer, is link it to your blogsite, so that any post you type on Live Writer gets sent to your WordPress site, with all your regular WordPress theme, widgets, etc.  To insert the photos, you click on Live Writer’s picture icon.  There are several ways to insert a photo.  I tried to insert it via web/Smugmug directly, and I couldn’t get that to work (dunno why).  So, I went into SmugMug and clicked on the photo I wanted to insert, and copied that photo’s URL.  I then went back to Live Writer and inserted that same photo from my computer, right clicked, and hyperlinked the photo to my SmugMug gallery using the URL I previously copied from the photo in SmugMug.  After publishing this post, I clicked on each photo and voila!  Each time I was taken to my photo website (via SmugMug) where the XLarge size of that particular photo was displayed.  I could close out of that photo and I could see all the other photos in that particular gallery.

Thanks, Dmitrii!
